I am so glad that I checked this book out from the library.
I LOVE Ellen, and when you read her book, it's like you are sitting next to her having a conversation.
I read one of Chelsea Handler's books, and although the comedic take on the books IS similar- I did NOT like Chelsea's books. Much like Chelsea- the line between fact and fiction is blurred, but in Ellen's book you laugh right along with her, instead of being all like "WTF?!"
*I am not saying to not read Chelsea's books - only using them for comparison sake*
*If you would like more on my opinion, just ask*
*I am not saying to not read Chelsea's books - only using them for comparison sake*
*If you would like more on my opinion, just ask*
For example, I always wondered why I like buckles:
"And I'm descendant of William Brewster, who came over on the Mayflower. I assume that's why I'm so attracted to a shoe with a buckle." (Degeneres, p. 49)
There was one part that particularly struck me, and could apply to the blog world:
"I've always liked writing. I like the feeling of having a nice pen in my hand. It feels like I'm creating something when I put pen to paper, even if it is just a doodle of a flower or a note that says, 'If you ever park in my spot again I will have your ass towed.' It's a nice feeling.
When you physically write something down you're forced to take time to actually think about what your writing. We don't really do that anymore. Now we just press buttons. We can delete things and change things at our leisure. We're so spoiled. Think about what cavemen had to go through when they wanted to write something down. They had to chisel it into stone. It probably took hours just to write 'Dear Krog. Going out for bread. Be back in twenty. Glok.' If they made a mistake they'd have to go out and find another flat stone and start all over. Who knows if they ever even made it out for bread. I do know they used to club each other over the head a lot, so I'm not saying we should do everything like the cavemen. I'm just saying nobody writes letters anymore.
Now everything is electronic and instantaneous. We e-mail, we text, we Facebook, we Twitter, Skype, instant message, iChat, blog, dance interpretatively on
YouTube. Every person who has a passing thought, opinion, question or answer can express it immediately on his or her computer, phone, laptop, tablet, or other portable electronic device that will be invented and revolutionize the communication in the short window of time between writing this book and it being published....
What's not so great is that all this technology is destroying our social skills. Not only have we given up on writing letters to each other, we barely even talk to each other. People have become so accustomed to texting that they're actually startled when the phone rings. It's like we suddenly all have Batphones. If it rings, there must be danger.
Now we answer, 'What happened? Is someone tied up in the old sawmill?'
'No it's Becky. I just called to say hi.'
'Well, you scared me half to death. You can't just pick up the phone and try to talk to me like that. Don't the tips of your fingers work?" (Degeneres, p. 138-140)
Tis sad but true, and I only moderately have an issue with it all....
Since we move all over the country and possibly the world, blogging allows me to maintain a friend base that I can virtually move anywhere. What bothers me, is that some bloggers aren't here to make friends. They are here to make fans. What do I mean? The people who just want to build up their followers and never talk to you again. THAT'S how you end up being anti-social.
"Follow me back?" = I probably won't even click on your blog.
It makes me feel used.
Sorry, I'm not sorry.
Let's build a friendship instead...Shall we?
Moral of the story:
Let's all read Ellen's book because it's flippin' funny, and let's all be FRIENDS - not just a GFC number. However, I would like to add people to my blog Facebook Page, because that's totally different. What's in it for you?
Well, I have set some goals for the FB page:
Once we reach 75 followers, I will share my BUDGET.
Once we reach 100, I will share my weight loss/health TIPS.
Once we reach 200, I will divulge all my secrets- including my JOB.
If any of that sounds interesting to you, or you just love me- Please share and support moi!
{You know that I would support you!!}

I liked you on FB!!! I'm excited to see what you share on there!! :)
Is this post the "non-post" that we talked about yesterday?! If so, your "non-post" is pretty freaking good! I love Ellen.
I LOVE this post. So true. I love how you said some bloggers dont want friends, but fans. SOOOO TRUE! I love your blog and I'm pretty sure we'd be great friends! Oh and I liked you on facebook :)
I think it is soooo true. I love that pin, "I should just change my voicemail to hang up and text me." I hate talking on the phone, even though I used to love it. I used to love to talk to people over iChat. Not so much anymore. I haven't used Skype, even though I have it.
I think it is sad to see that bloggers are looking for fans. I am more interested in building friendships. like friendships, where we are facebook friends, text and whatnot.
Girl I so agree with you! I can not stand the blogs that are all about numbers and followers. I mean yeah its great that you have 34579098765434567 GFC but seriously make friends!
Oh and just and FYI I totally liked you on FB! Just Sayin'
I agree with the others, your post is very true, and spot on! :)
I read this book too, and loved it! I think Ellen is one of the funniest people ever. Also, I agree with you on basically everything. Tecnology has definitely had a negative effect on people's social skills. And the "Follow me back?" bloggers - CAN NOT STAND THAT!
Love Ellen's books! They make great summer beach reads!
I am definitely on my way to checking out some Ellen books! They sound awesome. She is such a funny lady :D Thanks for sharing some of her excerpts from her book! Going to your FB page now.
I love reading your blog and keeping updated on your life!! I already am a fan of your facebook page!! <3 you
Fay
I need to get that book. I love Ellen. I went to her show once and it was FREEZING when we walked in. They made us dance for 30 minutes before the taping started. I was sooo glad they had the AC on full blast after that. I am the queen of chair dancing. :)
I'm off to find you on FB now. Since I'm at work I can't just click the link. Dumb work! :)
I totally agree that some bloggers aren't looking to make friends, which is sad, especially when they're locals and you could be networking. I'm not sure why people DON'T want to meet up. :) I'm all about filling my life with more joy.
Speaking of joy, summer is almost here and I'm going to be up for that Chinese dinner date soon!
omg I love me some Chelsea. Ellen too, but Chels wins in my book :)
Ok, now you REALLY have me wanting to read Ellen's book! I see what you're saying about the difference between her and Chelsea now, reading the passage from her book. Two totally different types of humor!
I want people to follow me because I want them to know my story. I want them to comment and to read their blog, to get to know them. It is a whole new/different community here on bloggerland, but it's nice to meet people!
I'm doing a shameless plug for my own blog on Friday-it's my 2 year blog birthday and I'm doing 2 giveaways. And all they have to do is follow my blog, and leave me a comment as to why they started blogging, and that's it! Too many contests are follow this! blog about me! tell your friends! follow my twitter/FB/instagram/etc! I'm not here for the numbers! I just want to get to know you!
Ok...rant over. Whew! ha ha ha. Ellen's book is officially moving to the top of my list!
I love Ellen - I look forward to 5 pm every day!
The quote explained so much of what I've been thinking lately --- I really do miss the handwritten letter!
(I can't stand the 'follow me back' thing either. I'll follow you if I like your blog and want to read it - not just to chalk up numbers!)
Umm I watch Ellen every day, whether I'm at work or not, I love her, and now I'll be reading her book.
I read Chelsie's first book and thought what you thought, there were some funny parts but I wasn't sure I believed it all.
Going to like your FB, you're welcome :) haha jk

i love ellen. she cracked me up last week or so when she was talking about the ipod or just electronics in general.
i currently am reading 7 by jen hatmaker, you might find it interesting.
my bf hasn't owned a cell phone in about 6 yrs! our home phone doesn't have call waiting OR caller id. we love life like this. and you'd laugh if you saw my cell phone (you can see it here: http://jeanyous.blogspot.com/2012/03/scavenger-hunt-sunday.html).
life is so different now then what it was even 3 yrs ago.
Haha, I am with you on the "just hang up and text me" voicemail message. ;) I like what Ellen said... I totally have that feeling when people call sometimes. I just assume that something serious must be going on, haha!
And girl, I am glad that you are here to make friends. I have loved getting to know you! :)
Can so relate! I really don't like bloggers who love numbers. I recently had a blogger who left a comment (that was deleted basically saying) "Thanks. I am now following. You may follow me here, catch me on twitter her.."
I love Ellen! She's a hoot! I liked you already. Let's get this budget thing going! Haha.
Ok I freaking love Ellen! Seriously sometimes she has me laughing so hard I'm crying. I have got to get her book! I'm always looking for new reads!
I agree, I don't like the only comment you get is "Follow me back". Come on, at least let me know you read my post won't you... LOL :). I go around, reading blogs and comment on way more blogs than people read/comment on mine... oh well :)
