Birth Story: The Best And Worst Day Of My Life

I still hold our wedding day as the best day of my life, but the day we brought a baby into the world together takes the title for "BEST and WORST Day of my life". Everyone kept telling me that my labor would be so easy, and the doctor even swaggered in thinking that it was going to be a breeze after bragging to my nurse friend that he wished all of his patients were like me. They said this would be a great labor experience with my health and fitness, however, that's not exactly how things turned out...but let's go back a few days.

On June 30th I went in for my last OB appointment a day after our original due date. I was 2 cm, 60% effaced, so we came to the agreement that we would Strip the Membranes {natural way to induce labor}, and if that didn't work, I would be scheduled for an induction. I hadn't wanted to be induced because that's just more drugs, but we also knew that leaving her in there for too long without knowing a true due date was a gamble too. So basically, we scheduled it, gave the family notice to head this way, and we were rarin' to go. My parents and Natalie {Charlie's Godmother} even arrived the night before, so we all had a nice dinner and a very sleepless night. Natalie and I giggled over the fact that we were basically having a sleepover like the old days, only now we were whispering about babies rather than  boys and instead of staying up until 4AM, we were getting up at that time to go to the hospital.

It didn't take long to check in, but emotions were high as we got the process started. Dressing gowns, IV's, Monitors, and going over and over the process filled the time until the doctor arrived, and then the Pitocin drip started about 8AM. Just in time for Will to finish up his academics and meet us at the hospital. {We couldn't have him missing class if we could help it!} Slowly the contractions started, and I realized that the day would not pass as quickly for everyone else as it was for me, so I sent them off to get some rest, which left time for Will and I to rest in between contractions. As you can imagine, we didn't have much success with that, so around 11:30 I was ready for the Epidural. I had been a little apprehensive about it, but I can honestly tell you that the lidocaine they use to numb you is the only thing that I felt. As a matter of fact, I didn't feel anything for the rest of the day and not in a good way. Well, good in that I wasn't feeling any pain, but bad because I didn't have any feeling from the ribs down. I was pretty worried when I touched anywhere below my ribs and I felt like I was touching a corpse. When they would move my legs I would say "What legs? I don't have any legs", and if only they had believed me...

Fast forward to 6:02pm, and the pushing began. I had no reference for how to push, but I listened to every bit of advice to start getting her down the birth canal. In spite of the fact that I had zero feeling, she was moving down and things were looking good up until we realized that she was turned to the side and didn't want to budge past my pelvic bone. After thirty minutes I suggested turning off the epidural, but the doctor seemed apprehensive. Instead, they pulled out extra handlebars, gave me every option known to man about how to push/pull/contort my body, and had Will and Natalie wrangling both my legs. This lead to another thirty minutes of pushing that got us nowhere until I could tell my doctor was getting frustrated. He was telling me to push where I felt his hand, so I told him I would if I could feel where he was pushing. I think it finally clicked that I did not have enough feeling to do what needed to be done and the epidural was then turned off. It would have been nice to take a break until it wore off, but nope...we kept pushing, and they kept telling me I was doing sooo great. I had to be on oxygen, was getting conflicting advice on how to push, and simply emotionally and physically drained, so I snapped back "I don't believe any of you". Luckily, it only took another thirty or so for me to tell that things were coming along, and as Natalie started getting bucked every time I pushed with growing strength in my legs, I at least felt like we were getting somewhere.

It was when I regained feeling in my abs that I knew we were in business. A nurse took over the leg opposite Will, and although I had barely any strength left, it only took one push for the doctor to realize it was time to pull out the safety net and put his delivery gown on. Two more pushes and he threatened mentioned that he may have to open me up to give her more room. Apparently that was just the push I needed to get her out, because he wasn't getting anywhere near me with those scissors. One more push and a tiny little human was placed on my chest. I was exhausted, they were sewing me up from a small tear on the left side, among a few other minor complications, but I could care less. I just was happy to be done with the hardest two hour workout I'd ever had in my life.

While they cleaned her across the room, we marveled at how long she was. We were thinking she would be 6 pounds and change, maybe 19 inches, and instead she was 7.13, 21 inches, and all legs! Actually, not all legs at the time because she had the WORST cone head I'd ever seen. I told Natalie to get her hat ready, because baby girl was not going to meet everyone like that. I know it's normal, but I totally had a "what have I done to my baby?!" moment. Poor thing hung out under my pelvic bone for so long that it was inevitable. I was only thankful that her face was perfect from being turned, and all that really mattered was she was healthy and loved.

Finally, once everybody had gone home, the three of us began our new life together. We clung to the natural instincts we didn't know we had, and hoped that would be enough to get us through the night, and well, the rest of her life.

Why Does The AC Only Go Out In Summer?

I'm glad y'all have appreciated all the pictures this week! It's funny, they make it look like we've got our act together, but just so you know...that's impossible with a newborn. In fact, on the day we took the newborn photos I was so engorged that I told the photographer I didn't want my chesticles anywhere in sight, and even worse- we forgot to refasten Charlie's diaper all the way on the way home and as you can imagine, we had to take apart and clean the whole car seat. See what you future parents have to look forward to!?

As if life with a newborn isn't difficult enough, we woke up to hot air blowing out of the AC unit on Wednesday. I called and let our rental company know that we had a newborn in an 85 degree house which got us moved to the top of the list, but then we found out that the whole unit may need to be replaced, which doesn't happen in one day. We now have two window units working full force, and I don't mind running errands so much right now.

All in all, things are going as good as can be expected, though. We are still working on our breastfeeding, but she's still alive and growing and I have proof. I took a meal to another brand new mommy this week, and was blown away by the difference between the two babies. Christian was born at the exact same stats as Charlie (7.13 pounds, 21 inches), and yet she's grown SO much in the two weeks before he was born. Crazy right?!

And in non-baby related news, I braved Target while out and about with Charlie and finally found my favorite calendar/planner! For whatever reason, my brain only functions with a calendar that is set up horizontally, and Blue Sky is the only company that makes one. These buggers are hard to find in stores other than online or Target. but they are still worth the hunt. Forget those expensive calendars that all bloggers are addicted to {you know which one I'm talking about}, because these are where it's at and the price tag is way better!

Now it's time for us to get out of this hot @$$ house, and head home for our final baby shower/reveal with the family. I've been stressed about driving Miss Charlie all the way to Pensacola by myself, but maybe the AC going out was meant to make me want to leave. Not that I want to leave Will and I feel bad that he'll be stuck here in the heat, but he knows he could come with us if he wanted {I'm only slightly trying to make him feel guilty}. Unfortunately, he's got studying to do to get ready for his FINAL check ride, and he doesn't think he'll be able to study as much with the fam. Either way, his girls will miss him terribly. He's been the only thing keeping me sane, so we shall see how this goes without him. Wish us luck!

I'm A Sucker For...

I like to think that I make pretty rational decisions most of the time, but I guess I will always be a sucker for some things. Aaaand it doesn't help to be in the home stretch of pregnancy where my will power is slightly diminishing. Don't judge me.

Anything 'Cake Batter', and if you want to know what heaven is:

Donuts on National Donut Day and taking Will to Krispy Kreme for the first time. He's had a Krispy Kreme donut, but we all know that unless you have them hot off the line it's not the same. Although, he still didn't even want one, so that meant more for me! Seriously though, I don't know how you can watch the freshly glazed jewels come down the line and say no.

A good deal, and even better, a good deal on an iPhone. Yeeaaaahhhh, I know I wanted to break up with Apple, but most of you told me you were happy with the 6's and I already knew I liked the camera from trying a friend's. What sealed the deal, though, was the sale that Sam's had last week. I got the 64GB for a whopping $197, which is unheard of. That's a HUNDRED BUCKS off, and I can get minimum $115 for our old phone. We also save money by using Lifeproof cases instead of buying insurance, but since it's not here yet I've had the phone since Friday and it's just sitting on my dresser. I'm telling you, Will gets on to me if I even look at it longingly. Hurry up Mr. Postman! Oh, and anyone need an iPhone 5?

Tubing down the river against my doctors advice. Technically, he never said "don't tube down the river", but I'm pretty sure it was implied when he gave me a long speech about not traveling at this point, staying near the hospital, taking it easy, etc, etc. Sorry doc...we had to get one trip in this year, because we probably won't be here next summer.

As usual, it was an absolute blast to leisurely float down a river on a warm Alabama day with some of our best friends. It's sad that we've got the whole trip down to a science now that it's probably the last time we will go, but oh well. We will most definitely end up stationed here in the future, and it will be a whole new adventure we can share with Charlie. Perhaps a little more G-Rated when she comes, but fun nonetheless.

This. Weekend. Was. Perfect.

Will got off early and we made it to PCB in time to check in, soak in the beautiful condo, and get ready for the maternity pics. I might have struggled with the new falsies I tried to put on and spent a little too much time on my hair, but all that matters is we still had to wait on the lighting to cooperate negating my lateness. Sadly, I don't have any pictures from the shoot because we really maximized our two hours of sunlight with tons of poses, three outfit changes (I seriously hope no one looked close as I straight up changed on the beach while Will tried to hold a towel), and the 500+ pictures we did manage to take.  The wind was TERRIBLE, so let's also hope she got some where you can see my face in spite of the wind whipping it around. Hence why my hair had no curl by the time we went to dinner:

But yeah...the real fun was Saturday when we hit the beach!
Carrie drove down to enjoy the fun in the sun with us and it couldn't have turned out to be a better day. We laid out, I took them to a few of my favorite spots: Pompano Joe's for lunch, Hook'd Up for beverages, Kilwin's for ice cream, and even got some pool time in back at the condo before we finally called it a day.

I envisioned brunch, shopping, and another day of fun on Sunday, but let's be real...we couldn't hang that much in one weekend if we tried. Instead, I woke up to flowers, a delicious breakfast, and we spent the rest of the day watching Disney movies, napping, grilling wings, and calling all the maternal influences in our lives to send them our love.

It's weird to think that this could have been the last time we catch some zzz's on the couch as just a couple. I thought for sure we wouldn't fit or that I would be too uncomfortable in my state to sleep, but I think that was the most comfortable I have been in months; snuggled up and wrapped in his arms. Pretty soon it will be Charlie snuggling on the couch with him, and I guess that's okay too ;) She just better recognize he's mine first! Teehee

A Little Of This And That

+ I tried Chick-fil-A's new Frosted Lemonade, and it was BANGIN'. It reminded me of Snow-To-Go, which I have been lusting over since we moved away from Virginia five years ago. {Brownie points if you've ever had Sno2Go} Don't worry, I didn't give sweet Scarlet any. I picked this uber adorable pup up from the vet for a friend, and I made sure she made it home safely.

+ I realized that I have 1.5 months until all of my commitments are finito! I'm so ready to be done with everything and just focus on CQB and Will. Hallelujah!

+ We had our first baby class, and the three hours flew by with more information than I could possibly process. Thank goodness we got to take home the book and there are two more classes. I think I was more disturbed than he was by the video of childbirth {hairy bush and all}, but it is my whooha that will be impacted by a basketball coming out of it. I'm scurred, y'all.

+ I'm finally starting to 'feel' this pregnancy. I'm now at 12 lbs. and starting to embrace the idea of her coming out. Up until this point I wanted her to stay in forever, but now...it doesn't seem so bad to kick her out. I think Mother Nature knows that pregnancy has to get uncomfortable to mentally prepare us for the separation.

+ I've been putting off and putting off starting the crib set because I have been intimidated and I am no pro when it comes to sewing, but now that I've started I never want to stop! The crib skirt is now getting it's final touches and I feel so much more confident about taking on this project. Whoop Whoop, 1/3rd of the way through.

+ Last, but not least, here are the Maui Nachos I posted on Instagram! I stumbled upon them by accident because I had extra Pina Colada sauce from making Coconut shrimp, but boy was I ecstatic when I found the recipe. I adore anything coconut and Will adores all things nacho, so this was a match made in coconut heaven.

Nachos
1 pork butt (2 lbs)
1 cup Coconut Water
Coconut Oil
Salt and Crushed Red Pepper
1 can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 lb colby jack cheese
3 Bell peppers (tri-color)
1/2 red onion, diced
Cilantro || Green Onions || Red Onion
Tortilla chips

Pina Colada Sauce
1 small can crushed pineapple
2/3 cup cream of coconut (found by the margarita mixes and alcohol, usually in a can)
1/3 cup sour cream

- Rub a boneless pork with Coconut Oil, Kosher Salt, crushed red pepper, and cook in a slow cooker for 8 hours on low, shredding the meat at the end.
- In a small bowl, mix together the cream of coconut, pineapple, and sour cream. set aside.
- Heat a large skillet to medium heat with a swirl of coconut oil, and add the peppers, onions and saute 3 minutes, then add the pinto beans to heat through.
- Line the chips up on a parchment or foil lined baking sheet.
- Place a little of the cooked pork in each chip, topped by beans, pina colada sauce, cheese and peppers. place in a preheated oven (400) for 8-10 minutes or until the cheese is gooey. Drizzle with the decadent Pina Colada sauce and try not to eat the whole pan at once ;)

We used big ol' pork chops because we were on sale that day and we only had 4 hours to cook, but Will threw them in the crockpot with some Coconut water and they turned out really well, too. Feel free to play with the recipe and make it your own.

I Think I'm Hungover

I'm not sure if it's safe to use the term hungover, but that's how I feel after this past weekend. I had an absolute blast, but I was SO exhausted on Sunday. I managed to get a run in, and even so that's only because I was motivated to work off the bacon stuffed cinnamon rolls and cupcakes I ate. Other than that, I accomplished a big fat nothing, and Will had to make dinner and make me eat because cooking just wasn't going to happen since I had zero appetite after stuffing my face. Eh...the perfect baby shower was all worth it. More on the baby shower later.

Tomorrow is our second specialist appointment, which I want to go well, and still I'm sad that could mean it would be our last ultrasound. {Insert sad face} Obviously, healthy baby trumps all, but I just love seeing her, and pregnancy is like a long distance relationship- you just pine until the next time you see them. I feel bad that Will has class and can't come, but hopefully I can get video of it too. Half the fun is seeing his face watching her and hearing her heartbeat. Swoon. Okay, it's bed time. Will just rolled over in his sleep and said "I love you, my queen." It's time to snuggle up and catch up on that sleep I need.

I Cut SIX Inches Off My Hair

TGIF! Can I say that now? Technically I have a job...
I may have today off already, but still I'm happy it's Friday. Actually, I'll be happy when it's next Wednesday. Tomorrow I have to volunteer in the morning, baby shower in the afternoon, shoot to Pensacola to sign our FIRST set of tenants, tie up loose ends at the house, back to Enterprise to attend meetings Monday morning, more volunteering, work, and then a HUGE community service event Tuesday. I. Can't. Wait. For. Wednesday.

Okay, so normally I wouldn't be due for a haircut until um...May or something because I'm cheap I just don't care to get my hair cut often. However, due to the current climate of my life, my hair has grown like Kudzu vine. As such, it doesn't look like I cut 6 inches off, but it is the shortest it has been in years and I think I like it.

Other than busy {as usual} and lopping my hair off, we have found our tenants and will hopefully have the paperwork finalized in time for March 1st rent (whoopwhoop), I FINALLY ordered the free pair of Ariat boots I won several months ago, and CQB is now about 13oz. I still don't feel pregnant in spite of the itty bitty baby bump, but I do get more excited by the day. Homegirl is taking over our lives, and I'm completely okay with that. ;)

In closing, I'm ecstatic that The Voice is back on. It's one of the very few shows that I actually look forward to, and it leaves me with a perma-smile every time. The raw talent, the ambition, the camaraderie, and watching the coaches humbled by these newbs gets me every time. I always catch myself still as a statue, mouth wide open, and a huge goofy grin to boot while I watch. If you've never watched it- you are missing out!

I Got A J-O-B!

Okay, so maybe calling it a 'job' is a stretch, but I am getting paid and that's what matters. A month ago, I saw a fellow MilSpouse was looking for someone to meet their kids when they get off the bus and keep them alive until their dad gets home. I hadn't been looking for a job and haven't been a nanny in ten years, but I figured "why not?"

On top of that, I've been learning to run this investment house of ours, and that might actually start paying off today too. I'd had some interest, but no solid tenant options until this weekend. A friend suggested I share it on Postlets.com, and hot damn my phone and email has been blowing up! I had to schedule an open house to accommodate the 30+ people that have contacted me, and my dear old dad is going to run the showing for us. He's never done anything like this, so I hope it doesn't overwhelm him.

We honestly owe him a lot after all he's helped us with during this process. He built us new drawers to give us more storage in the kitchen, he's been back and forth checking every detail, and he and Will saved us hundreds of dollars by putting up all the blinds. Speaking of...blinds are holy expensive, and custom fitting them? oy vey... It really didn't take us long to get it all done with the three of us, but now I see why people pay big bucks to have them installed.

Today feels like a good day...a good day to start a fun part time gig and a great day to find a worthy tenant for our little investment home. Show me the monnnaaaayyyyy.

We Finally Saw The Specialist!

Hello from Mardi Gras! You may assume we are in Nola, but we are actually finishing up our trip to the original birthplace of Mardi Gras, which is good ol' Mobile, Alabama.

I'd love to tell you all about it, but we've been off the grid at quaint little B&B's that barely have wifi. I figured I'd just check in and tell you that our appointment with the Specialist went AMAZING, and they confirmed we have a healthy baby girl with all the right working parts! They still want to monitor her, but that's fine with me because I get to see her at least two more times via ultrasound in the next four months or so. On top of that they confirmed that I most likely won't have a high-risk delivery and they aren't worried about a single thing with my health. Thanks for all the positive thoughts and prayers, y'all. I think it paid off.

As If I Could Be Anymore Proud...

Well, I'm glad that y'all are just as excited about this new adventure as I am. Technically, I just got promoted from SAHW to SAHM, so I'm gonna get a pay raise, right Will?

But seriously...this has been the craziest two weeks of my life. Find out we are pregnant, close on a house, blindsided with the news that we were 19 weeks pregnant, AND we had Will's Selection Ceremony. Most of you know that he is in Flight School for the Army, and up until now he has been learning to fly helicopters in general. This week, they released the class rankings and the students had the honor of choosing what they were going to fly in order of said ranking. Not to brag or anything, buuuuut...he got second out of the WHOLE class after a year of cumulative training to get his first choice aircraft!!

We are now a Blackhawk family, and we couldn't be more ecstatic. Everything has fallen into place like I couldn't believe, and now the real fun begins. PS...I totally got my truck stuck in the mud to take that picture. Do what you gotta do.

Now I just need a min or a month to process all of this. Kthxbye.

'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant'

I can now vouch that it is possible to be pregnant and not know it.

About two weeks ago, my back started hurting. It reminded me of when I had a kidney infection, only higher up the back. After a week of sharp pains, I finally went to the doctor who told me I was probably "stopped up" if you know what I'm sayin'. Luckily, my friend Natalie is a nurse and she told me to demand a blood or urine test to check for infection, and thank goodness she did or I still wouldn't know I was pregnant.

Other than the chest growth, I've had ZERO symptoms, and when you practice multiple forms of birth control, pregnancy is not something you would even consider. The OB even asked Will if he had noticed anything, and he couldn't think of a single thing. That coupled with the fact that I'm not showing, you probably won't believe that I'm NINETEEN WEEKS pregnant. I'm not just expecting...I'm halfway flippin' through the whole pregnancy! Crazy right?

For the past week, people have asked me if I'm happy and/or excited, and up until yesterday, the only response I could come up with was that I was in shock. You all know babies were not anywhere near our radar, so it's no surprise that this came as a surprise. It's been really fun telling the family, our close friends, and a few bloggy friends, but after the excitement of giving the news, I was sad because I didn't feel pregnant at the end of the day. However, our first OB appointment started to turn that around. Seeing a FULLY formed 10oz nugget in there made it more real, and now that I know the sex it's even more fun to start seeing the future and talking baby names. In case you are wondering...IT'S A GIRL!!

You can all now say I told you so...I know you've been waiting ;)

It's House Closing Time!

The day of of Closing on our new home has arrived. This involves a very large Cashier's Check {oy vey}, dropping money on Homeowner's Insurance, purchasing new blinds for the new windows, and a new lawn all in one weekend. To say this is going to be a busy weekend is an understatement, but we will be making time for family {they are bribing us to hang out by taking us to Coffee Cup our favorite breakfast joint}, services for my friend that passed, and hopefully a sleepover at Grandma's. I really want to go to Ulta too, but I'm not holding my breath. Perhaps if I demand to go to Fresh Market for groceries, I can sneak next door.
A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!

Today, I played with a Weimaraner, and it got me thinking about Weiser. We actually had a little 'going away' shindig for him to celebrate his life, which I'm sure sounds super strange, but it made us feel better. He got a huge T-bone out of the deal, so it most definitely made him happy. He may look sad in this picture, but once we let him hide in the guest bedroom to chow down in private, he was probably the happiest I've ever seen him. It was beautiful.

If that's not adorable, then I don't know what is. We miss you We-Man!
Wish us luck today...We're gonna need it.

It's Friday, FRIDAY!

Thankfully I can report that this week has been much better than the last. I've only cried like twice this week, so that's real progress. I've just kept myself busy this week. I've been cleaning, cooking, and working on Publicity stuff, so it keeps my mind off things. Other than that:

+ We've started planning our {second} annual trip to the McGuire's 5K, and I'm pretty excited about it. It's not until March, but you really need that long just to mentally prepare. Plus, the hotels are already booking up- it's that serious. Cross your fingers that I can get the cottage I want booked before someone steals it! If I do, you are all invited. *winkwink

+ I ordered my THIRD pair of booties due to my new obsession. I didn't actually keep the first two pair because I'm so indecisive- one was too flat, the other too cheap- but I think I'm really going to like these. I also have to order some Ariat's because I won a $250 gift card from them, but man...I never thought it would be this hard to pick. I feel like if I'm spending that much on shoes it needs to be a pair that I will get the most out of, but my favorites either don't have my size or the color I want. I've tried to contact the company to find out when they restock or whatever, but I feel kind of weird saying, "Hi. You gave me free money, but I don't like anything you have that fits me. Kthxbye."

+ I made a new friend yesterday. I went to see the movie The Judge with the Spouse Club, and a new chick showed up that doesn't know anyone in town. They connected her with me so that I could get her all the FRG information, and before I knew it...it was like a really good first date. Have you ever been on a date where it went from lunch to coffee to dinner and maybe more? Well, that's exactly what happened. We watched the movie then migrated to Starbucks, and Will even invited her to dinner because he liked that I had friends when he was locked away {by the Army, not jail for the newbies}. We probably would have talked all night, but we had to break away at some point. Now I'm hoping our 'second date' won't be awkward, but we all know how the real colors start coming out as the 'dates' progress.

Well, I hope you all have a great three day weekend or at least that you have a three day weekend. We don't have any plans, and that is perfectly fine with me. We will probably watch football on Sunday, but I won't tell you who I'm rooting for. I have a really great story as to why I'm rooting for this particular team, but I don't want to ruffle any feathers until I can elaborate. Any of you have a team playing?

OUR House!

Until 6PM on Tuesday, we weren't actually sure we were getting this house, so I felt like talking in depth about it would jinx it. Technically, we still won't own the house until it closes, but we have offered, signed contract, inspected, negotiated, and signed a whole new contract, which means...we pretty much have a house!

Teehee just joshin'! That was the half a million dollar house we got to check out on our way to lunch with the realtor. It was fun to look at, but this purchase is an investment to rent out. NOT our fantasy home. Actually, it's kind of weird that we found this house and we really did fall in love with it against the cardinal rule of "don't fall in love with an investment house". I don't actually know if that's the cardinal rule, but we've most certainly heard it a lot.

So what made us fall in love with it? It was built in '73, but renovated this past year. They took it down to studs and replaced everything from the ground up, including expanding the square footage. You walk in and it feels like a a brand new house. New walls, floors, windows, HVAC, appliances, bathrooms, fixtures, roof, and the list goes on. A list of things that we would have to replace in all the other houses we looked at. Basically, an ideal investment for newbies like us, and that's why it was hard not to fall in love.

Did you get a load of that kitchen?! We will own ALL new EXPENSIVE appliances and we'll never even get to use them. A cryin' shame! As a matter of fact, anyone need an oven? I'm thinking a $3,000 oven is way too good much responsibility for tenants.

I guess you could say it's been a really fun process with ups and downs, which I will share along with the best advice we received along the way, but I think that should wait until we actually have the keys. Admittedly, we love this house, but we are also standing our ground on the few demands we have left after the last inspection. Like I said, we have signed a new contract including those contingencies, and still...we aren't putting our eggs in one basket.
Momma didn't raise no fool.
